Women’s Jean Pockets

As a long-time wearer of women’s jeans, their pockets have always been normal for me. You get to fit one small lip balm and a few receipts inside, and then everything else goes in your backpack or your purse.

It wasn’t until my senior year of high school that I realized what I was missing. I got together with my boyfriend, and we often took walks around campus. While walking and talking, I noticed that his hands could fit into his jean pockets. Mine could not. At first, I thought it was because I was wearing particularly tight jeans that day. When I went home, I tried on my other jeans and tested. My hands could not fully fit into any of them – at least comfortably. I was able to squeeze into one pair, but not at the cost of blood circulation in my fingers.

I started to do some experimentation because this felt like an injustice. At the time I owned a Samsung Galaxy SII. It could not fit in my pockets without sticking halfway out or falling to the dangerous floor. I asked my boyfriend to hold it for me. It completely disappeared into his pocket. When I pointed this out to him, he didn’t believe me at first, until I showed him the evidence. He seemed just as appalled as I did. He could fit a small, literally pocket-sized planner in his pants, whereas even my back pockets couldn’t accommodate the width of the planner.

As I’ve gone through higher education, there comes a time once in a full moon that I find jeans that fit my hips, legs, and have at least functional pockets. It’s even rarer that I can put my hands in there comfortably. Often times, my student ID card slips out when I sit down, and it’s the size of a credit card. But with smartphones getting larger (and then smaller and then larger again), how is it that women are always given the short end of the stick when it comes to carrying capacity? Aren’t smartphones supposed to be convenient, and therefore should be able to fit in a pocket?

A long-term friend of mine offered an answer. Mind you, she’s a conspiracy theorist. She claimed that ‘women have small or no pockets so that the big industries can sell us purses. Then hired thieves can steal those purses, with our wallets, phones, and everything else in them.’

I’m not sure about big industries hiring thieves when they already steal our money with ridiculously high prices, but her theory does have some truth in it. Those who carry purses usually have one central place with all their things for a thief to take and run away with. As an unrelated truth, it is very believable that a company that makes both jeans and purses would lessen pocket size in order to sell more purses.

This is not just an American phenomenon. The BBC did an article on the topic, as well as The Atlantic and Marketplace. This clearly isn’t a new or isolated issue, but we are still at a time where I have to use a small purse for just my phone and my wallet.

  • Are women just doomed to small or no pockets?
  • Is it too much to ask for a large scrap of fabric sewn in a particular place?
  • Or am just going to have to suck it up and buy a bigger purse?

Let me know what you think, and if there are any particular brands that have really nice pockets!
